Much has been written on how the new rules with soccer-style substitutions will improve or worsen the one-day game. The only change that ICC has come up with on umpiring is to have additional technology aids to help the umpires get more decisions right. Srinivas, a friend and reader of this blog, writes in:

I heard something interesting during the recent India-Pakistan series coverage on Fourth Umpire (the much maligned program in Doordarshan hosted by Charu Sharma and Srikanth, not the new blog that Rahul Bhatia has introduced his readers to). An idea came from a smart Indian cricket fan during the discussion. “Except for New Zealand and England where the weather is mostly cool, umpires are stressed due to the heat and the stressful situations of the game. There are instances when umpires have displayed poor form from one match to another or within 5 days of a test match. Why can't umpires work as a team? Perhaps, for a test match, we could have a team of four umpires who rotate every session. This can also include the third umpire.”

Simon Taufel and Billy Bowden have been unhappy with technology interventions diminishing their role in the game. Perhaps they will be happier to have more personnel from their fraternity assisting them. To me this at least ensures that the chance of cricketers and cricket fans being anguished by Bucknor-like, decisions is likely to be reduced that bit more.

That is right.
If ICC panel of expert umpires, can get 94% right decisions, it needs to be improved. It cannot remain at that figure for long.
ICC needs to think on these lines as well, apart from taking help of technology.

Whenever I hear umpires complain about technology diminishing their role, it pisses me off. When former players also oppose technology for this reason, it irritates me even further..

The game is being played between 22 players. Everything else is a prop, and people don't come to watch, or follow props. The ball, bat, stumps, sight screen and umpires are all props.

We started using white balls in floodlit matches because it improved the game. No one complained about diminishing the role of red balls, did they? Umpires, like balls, are just props. Even if their role is diminshed, who cares?

A group of friends and I hosted Mr Venkataraghavan to dinner when he was in Melbourne to umpire a test match.

He put things into numerical perspective.

Brett Lee bowls at or close to 100k. It covers the 10 yard traverse distance (the max length the umpire has the ball in view after he watches for the front foot and before the ball pitches)in 20 milliseconds or ONE THIRD OF A SECOND.

While all of us are capable of focusing for this minute amount of time, will we be able to do so for five days at a stretch without errors creeping in?

Apologies, it should have been 100Mph (160kmph). On that basis, the umpire has even lesser time to focus on the ball after he has watched for the front foot.

Hmm Umpires being substituted. Seems like a nice idea. Afterall they deserve a break too, standing in the heat(carribean/subcontinent whoa) for 5 days, it must be crazy.
